From Roseville Rails To Sandy Beaches

Kasondra Gerth, awarded the Jerry W. McNeil Scholarship in 2006, lets us know what she’s been up to since receiving the honor. Kasondra went from the rails of Roseville to the sandy beaches of Santa Cruz. Here’s what Kasondra had to say about the scholarship:

After graduation from Roseville High School, I went to University of California; Santa Cruz. During my stay I continued enjoying athletics and participated in a handful of intramural sports including basketball, ping pong and beach volleyball. I established myself in the beach volleyball community and have played and won various tournaments. Academically, I found a love for language and have intensively studied Spanish, French, German, and some Italian. My enjoyment of language lead me to spend a year in Bordeaux, France, studying French linguistics. This year, I returned to Santa Cruz to graduate with my bachelor’s of arts in linguistics.

Receiving the Jerry McNeil Scholarship motivated me to excel academically while balancing my love of sports…

My plans for next year are still uncertain. I plan to take a year off of school to teach English abroad, possibly in France as an English assistant in a public school. Ultimately I intend to return to school and obtain a master’s degree in speech therapy.

Receiving the Jerry McNeil Scholarship motivated me to excel academically while balancing my love of sports with my passion to learn. Although I did not know Jerry McNeil personally, his positive personality and exceptional characteristics echo through the words spoken of him. I am proud and grateful to have been honored in his name.
